A Beautiful Day Crossing the Kansas Prairie

Boy, did we have a great day today!!! A beautiful drive through Kansas prairies; we saw hawks, herons, white egrets, in addition to the domesticated animals. I have much more to say about the prairies. But Sal penned his impression while I was driving, so I’ll let him speak for both of us tonight.

After leaving Topeka, driving south on I-35, I found my mindset slowly changed. I found myself thinking of the past, maybe 250 years ago. The gentle rolling prairie just mesmerized me. I found myself thinking of the early settlers, heading west.

Here I am, flying down the road at 65 miles per hour, pulling ‘my wagon’ with 350 horses. Most of us do not think of horses much. But if not for those gentle animals, it almost would have been unthinkable for families to head west.

The hardships the settlers experienced must have been unbearable; heat, rain, exhaustion. What water they had in a lot of places, was only what they could carry. Then the big thing, no detailed maps, information posts, let alone a GPS. How did they get there? How did they know when they had arrived?

Another thing hit me as I drove along looking at the countryside, there were very few trees. Therefore, enter the sod houses, and oh yes, buffalo chips for their fires.

Thank you to those whose trail I am following. They were a whole different breed of people, but with a dream.

This is now cattle country. I saw small cattle herds, spotted here and there, and rolling prairie as far as I could see. It was absolutely beautiful.

Now as I continue to Oklahoma City, I will reach into the cooler for a cold bottle of water, turn up the A/C, check the GPS, and drive on. Sure am getting saddle soar…

Just one more note from the wife…we arrived in Rockwell RV Park, only to discover that they had given our reserved sight away. So we pulled into a sight which was open, only to find very, very close quarters, and much less than sanitary conditions, i.e. the sewer pipe was only covered by plastic wrap. We’re moving in the morning…
