A Rest Day in St Charles/St Louis

Overnight in Sundermeier RV Park…Planes, trains, and automobiles, and at 6AM a fast moving garbage truck!!
We can’t say the park is not nice. It is, if you like to camp in a concrete parking lot. All the sights are perfectly level, and very large. But the Trailer Life Directory says ‘some shade’. When we pulled in yesterday, Sal asked for a site with shade if possible. The lady told him if he could find a tree to park under it. LOL

We found a great place for dinner last night, particularly if you are a dog lover. The place is called R. T. Weiler’s. Now for those of us who are a little slow, the owner loves rottweilers, hence the name. They have man’s best friend covering the walls. Customers are permitted to bring in framed photos of their canines, and they are promptly hung for the world to appreciate. Our waiter said they try to group them by dog type, but it doesn’t always work out that way. Sal is a beagle lover. So after dinner he had to roam the restaurant (highly encouraged by the management) until he found the ‘beagle section’. There was a 6 week old beagle pup, just as cute as he cute be, hanging right next to the bar.

If you’re ever in St Charles, we definitely recommend R.T Weilers. The menu ranges from pizza & wings to anything smoked or grilled, plus several types of salads and appetizers. We couldn’t decide which smokehouse item to try, so we ordered a sampler. It had pulled pork, beef brisket, and ribs. All were wonderful, even without sauce, which was provided on the side. Just far too much food!!

Another note about the place, they serve all children’s meals in a plastic dog bowl with the stamped shot of a rottweiler on the side. Not sure why they think children should eat from dog bowls, but it was cute to us, and the children at the table next to us didn’t seem to mind.
But enough about the restaurant, after all they are not paying us for advertising!!!

We went into St Louis this afternoon to see the Arch. It’s impressive from any direction. But we have a brochure from the Sundermeirer’s Park which showed a sunset of the Arch with the St Louis skyline in the backward. While we were there in the middle of the afternoon, photographer husband decided he had to have that same shot. So across the Mississippi we went to the Casino Queen Riverboat. We stood on the Observation Deck in 90+ degree heat to get the shot he wanted. But I must admit, it is a nice view.

And of course, because we were in the Casino, we had to do a little gambling. We decided how much we were willing to lose and split it. I had a little luck early on; then my luck changed and I lost all I started with plus my winnings. Sal, on the other hand, was luckier. He won enough to make up for some of my loses. Long story short, we walked out of the Casino down only $20.

But the highlight for me was to stand on that riverboat and know that I was on the Mississippi River. Yes, I know I’m hokey, but it’s another of things I’d always wanted to do. So now I can cross it off my Life’s List.

We thoroughly enjoyed our day off the road, and ended up back at R.T. Weiler’s for dinner again. Found one more thing we like about the place. There onion rings are probably some of the best either of us had ever had.

Tomorrow is another travel day. So we’ll be singing ‘On the Road Again’ with Willie tomorrow morning.

Thanks for listening…
Fay

Thanks again for another great entry! That must have been awesome on the Mississippi, a river that most only read about...filled with so much history. So, did the sunset picture with the arch succeed??
