Second Day on the Road - IN to MO

Again we planned to be on the road by 8AM. But the Gremlins are still with us! Made coffee last night in order to be able to have a quick cup of coffee with breakfast, and be on our way. Nope, foiled again. Before we left the campsite we discovered that the plug on the kitchen wall was not working. So we stopped at a nearby fast food place for coffee and a quick breakfast. Got on the road after filling the truck at 8:36AM; not too far off the mark.

We agreed before we left home that we would drive two hours on and two off, and would alternate starters each day. Since Sal started and ended the day yesterday, today was my day to drive the first leg of the trip. Just a short note about yesterday, by driving the middle leg of yesterday’s trip, I got the section of road where construction was underway.

Well, guess what, Saturday was no different. Shortly after we pulled onto the interstate, we encountered those big cement road dividers. I don’t like those things when I’m in the passengers seat, let alone behind the wheel with the Outback in tow!!! Before the construction stretch ended we were narrowed to one lane with cement barricades on both sides! But I made it thru without any new scratches or dents, just slightly shaken from the experience.
But apparently there are not to many lady RV drivers in this part of the country. Every time someone passed us, they did a double take when they saw a woman behind the wheel. Some even commented to their partner and pointed.

Then Sal took the wheel for the second leg of today’s journey, and of course the construction ended. He sailed along good interstate, with no construction and very little traffic. But in fairness, I must admit that he too encountered construction with some of those cement barriers before we got out of Ohio.

There was one very high point in our travels today. As we passed near Dayton on the interstate, we came to an overpass which was completely covered in American flags. They were alternately placed on the overpass fence, first vertically and then horizontally. I wish we could have gotten a photograph, but by the time we saw them at 65MPH, they were behind us quickly. The experience left a big lump in our throats. What a great country we live int!!!

We arrived in our selected stopping point for the day, Grandpa’s Farm RV Park, by about 2:45PM. The campground is very nice, lots of large trees for shade, and very level campsites. The folks in the office even guided us with a golf cart to our campsite. Nice place!!!

Again, as an add on, we paid $2.859 for gas in PA, and $2.699 in OH. Let’s hope it continues to go in the downward direction.

Oh, and the plug issue from Sat. morning was easily resolved. The electrician, aka Sal, just reset the GFI and all was well. Why didn’t I think of that this morning???

And now to a topic which may create conflict between spouses. If you don’t have a GPS, and are planning a cross-country trip, buy one. The added advantage of knowing whether an exit or interchange is on the left or right, is in itself enough to justify the expense. We will never leave home without one again.

P.S. The one thing about the GPS, now I have two women telling me what to do, how to do it, and where to GOOOOO.
